A wonderful experience took place on May 3, the 249^th anniversary of the foundation of the Passionist Nuns. The Italian monasteries together with our Croisy monastery marked this event by having a 30-minute Zoom encounter (free on the internet) to gratefully remember the events of our foundation. It was for most of us the first introduction to Zoom, which can be of great service to us in the future.

To all our beloved Mothers and Sisters in the Passionist monasteries of Italia and also in Croisy, Francia – I greet you with joy, thanksgiving and prayer. How wonderful that we can meet together via Zoom in this, our technological age!

As you know, today is the 249^th anniversary of the foundation of our first monastery in Corneto, now Tarquinia, Italia.  Therefore, to Mother Rosaria and all the Nuns in Tarquinia, I send a special greeting and congratulations. 

So now, let’s quiet our hearts and for a few moments, let’s go back in time and recall what took place on May 3, 1771, which was then the feast of the Finding of the True Cross.  This historical fact—the feast of the Finding of the True Cross--invites us to deep reflection as we celebrate our foundation day.  Passionist Nuns throughout 249 years of our history have been finding the true cross of Jesus—the true “Tree of Life”—and it has marked every step of our journey, as an ever-renewing source of energy.   

We gratefully recall that the founding of the Tarquinia monastery was the precious fruit of so many years of prayer, work and suffering on the part of our Holy Founder, St. Paul of the Cross, and also on the part of Ven. Mother Mary Crucified and the other Nuns of that first community.  All of them had been personally chosen and prepared by our holy founder.  All of them had exercised heroic virtues of persevering hope and prayerful suffering in order to arrive at this longed-for day.  Thankfully, their names are inscribed in marble in the Nuns choir of our Tarquinia monastery.

We remember how on the evening of May 3rd, they gathered in the Cathedral with the bishop and the people of the city, and how after the service they left briefly to put on their Passionist habits.  When they returned into the church and were ready to go in procession to their new monastery, Mother Mary Crucified and each of the founding Nuns took upon themselves wooden crosses and began the procession toward the new convent.  After all of them had entered their new home, our Holy Founder’s representative, Fr. John Mary Cioni, cp, handed a copy of the primitive rule to Mother Mary Crucified and the enclosure was established.  From his sickbed in Rome, the elderly St. Paul of the Cross spiritually embraced all of his dear Nuns by his prayerful presence, offering to Jesus Crucified the sacrifice of being unable to attend an event for which he had suffered so much.

Dear Mothers and Sisters, next year on May 3, we will begin the 250^th  jubilee year of our foundation.   

Just as our holy founder and the first Passionist Nuns went through the birth pangs of the founding of our religious Institute, so also we ourselves have shared in the birth pangs of bringing our new Monastic Congregation into existence.  We have struggled to understand and embrace what the Father was asking of us through the Holy Spirit working in the Church.  We have learned how from the beginning, St. Paul of the Cross had desired both a male and a female branch of his Congregation, and how with the establishment of our Monastic Congregation his desire is being fulfilled.    

Let us invoke the intercession of the many holy Passionist men and women who have gone before us.  We are surrounded by the prayers of this great cloud of witnesses who in their life on earth have kept the Passionist charism burning brightly.  Now it is our turn.  Now it is our turn to live and to develop our Passionist charism so that we can hand it on alive and fresh and vibrant to another generation.

I am confident that all of us long for a deep interior renewal of our Passionist Congregation and for the blessing of new and holy vocations.  If we do our part, God will not fail to do His.  So, let’s join together in an interior preparation for the celebration of our 250^th anniversary to begin next year.  We all desire that 250 years from now, there will still exist many fervent Passionist Nuns with oil lamps burning brightly to the glory of the Father, the love of our Crucified Bridegroom and the salvation of souls. 

I close with this quote from Fr. Floriano’s conference delivered to us at our First General Chapter: “The life of the Passionist Nun today should witness to the love of Christ crucified, who is the hope of salvation for the human family.  Today, you should be glad witnesses of how much Jesus loves each one of us, and continues to be the one Mediator of all.”

INCONTRO ZOOM 03-05-2020 : Italia-Francia

Saluto con gioia, ringraziamento e preghiera voi tutte, nostre amate Madri e Sorelle nei monasteri passionisti d'Italia e anche a Croisy, in Francia. Che bello incontrarci insieme via Zoom in questa nostra era tecnologica!

Come sapete, oggi ricorre il 249° anniversario della fondazione del nostro primo monastero a Corneto, ora Tarquinia, Italia.  Per questo, mando un saluto e un augurio speciale a Madre Rosaria e a tutte le monache di Tarquinia. 

Ora, quindi, mettiamoci in un clima di silenziosa preghiera e per qualche momento torniamo indietro nel tempo e ricordiamo ciò che avvenne il 3 maggio 1771, che era allora la festa del Ritrovamento della Vera Croce.  Questo fatto storico - la festa del ritrovamento della vera croce - ci invita a una profonda riflessione mentre celebriamo il giorno della nostra fondazione Le Monache Passioniste durante 249 anni della nostra storia hanno trovato la vera croce di Gesù - il vero "Albero della Vita" - e questo ha segnato ogni passo del nostro cammino, come fonte di energia sempre nuova.  

Ricordiamo con gratitudine che la fondazione del monastero di Tarquinia è stato il frutto prezioso di tanti anni di preghiera, lavoro e sofferenza da parte del nostro Santo Fondatore, San Paolo della Croce, e anche da parte della Ven. Madre Maria Crocifissa e delle altre monache della prima comunità.  Tutte erano state scelte e preparate personalmente dal nostro Santo Fondatore.  Tutte avevano esercitato virtù eroiche di speranza perseverante e di sofferenza orante per arrivare a questo giorno tanto desiderato.  Fortunatamente i loro nomi sono scritti in marmo nel coro delle Monache del nostro monastero di Tarquinia.

Noi ricordiamo come il 3 maggio si riunirono nella Cattedrale con il vescovo e la gente della città, e come dopo il servizio divino partirono brevemente per indossare l’abito passionista.  Quando tornarono in chiesa ed erano pronte per andare in processione al loro nuovo monastero, Madre Maria Crocifissa e ciascuna delle monache fondatrici presero su di loro delle croci di legno e iniziò la processione verso il nuovo monastero.  Dopo che tutte erano entrate nella loro nuova casa, il rappresentante del nostro Santo Fondatore, P. Giovanni Maria Cioni, cp, consegnò una copia della regola primitiva a Madre Maria Crocifissa e fu stabilita la clausura.  Dal suo letto di malato a Roma, San Paolo della Croce, ormai anziano, / abbracciò spiritualmente tutte le sue care Monache con la sua presenza orante, offrendo a Gesù Crocifisso il sacrificio di non poter assistere ad un evento per il quale aveva tanto sofferto.

Care Madri e Sorelle, l’anno prossimo, il 3 maggio, inizieremo il 250° anno giubilare della nostra fondazione.    

Come la nostra santa fondatrice e le prime monache passioniste hanno vissuto il travaglio della nascita del nostro Istituto religioso, così anche noi abbiamo condiviso il travaglio della nascita della nostra nuova Congregazione monastica.  Abbiamo faticato a capire e ad abbracciare ciò che il Padre ci chiedeva attraverso lo Spirito Santo che opera nella Chiesa.  Abbiamo imparato come, fin dall’inizio, San Paolo della Croce aveva desiderato un ramo maschile e uno femminile della sua Congregazione, e come con l'istituzione della nostra Congregazione Monastica il suo desiderio si sta realizzando.     

Invochiamo l'intercessione dei numerosi santi passionisti, uomini e donne, che ci hanno precedute.  Siamo circondate dalle preghiere di questa grande nube di testimoni/ che nella loro vita sulla terra hanno tenuto vivo il carisma passionista.  Ora tocca a noi.  Ora tocca a noi vivere e sviluppare il nostro carisma passionista/ per poterlo trasmettere vivo e fresco e vibrante ad un'altra generazione.

Sono fiduciosa che tutte noi desideriamo un profondo rinnovamento interiore della nostra Congregazione passionista e la benedizione di nuove e sante vocazioni.  Se facciamo la nostra parte, Dio non mancherà di fare la sua.  Uniamoci dunque in una preparazione interiore per la celebrazione del nostro 250° anniversario che inizierà l'anno prossimo.  Tutte noi desideriamo che tra 250 anni esistano ancora molte ferventi monache passioniste con le lampade d’olio accese e sfavillanti   per la gloria del Padre, l'amore del nostro Sposo Crocifisso e la salvezza delle anime. 

Concludo con questa citazione tratta dalla conferenza di P. Floriano che ci è stata consegnata al nostro Primo Capitolo Generale: La vita della monaca passionista oggi dovrebbe testimoniare l'amore di Cristo crocifisso, che è speranza di salvezza per la famiglia umana.  Oggi dovreste essere gioiose testimoni di quanto Gesù ami ciascuno di noi e continui ad essere l'unico Mediatore di tutti".
